Cardinals Fall to Blue Jays, Qualify for Landmark Playoffs

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. - The Catholic University women's soccer team fell to Elizabethtown 3-0 Saturday evening to close out its regular season.

With the loss, the Cardinals (8-7-3, 4-2-1 LC) finished their season as the fourth seed in the Landmark Conference, meaning they will take on the top seed in the tournament semifinal next week.

Catholic hit the post on four different occasions in the contest and outshot the Blue Jays 25-7, but could not find the back of the net in defeat.

The visitors almost jumped out to an early lead when junior midfielder Maggie Moorcones hit the left post in the 11th minute but the attempt stayed out. Elizabethtown scored ten minutes later to take a 1-0 advantage.

Freshman forward Elizabeth Gorman hit the top crossbar in the first minute of the second half as the Cards pushed for an equalizer. Their bad fortune continued, however, as the Blue Jays scored on an own goal later on in the 59th minute.

The Cardinals came close once again in the 77th minute when Sarah Brush's shot from the left side hit the outside of the far post and the rebound from Elizabeth Johnson blasted off the crossbar and was cleared out.

The Blue Jays put the match away soon after as Lydia Lawson scored her 20th goal of the season in the 80th minute, putting Elizabethtown up 3-0.

Junior goalkeeper Nina Fernandez made two saves in the loss for the Cardinals.

The Cardinals travel to take on top-seeded Susquehanna on Wednesday evening for the Landmark semifinals. The contest is a rematch of last year's conference semifinal, when the second-seeded River Hawks topped Catholic 2-0 on their way to their first Landmark championship in program history. Kickoff time in Selinsgrove, Pa. is to be determined.
