Cardinals Downed by River Hawks in Landmark Semifinal

SELINSGROVE, Pa. - The Catholic University women's soccer team's impressive 2018 season came to an end Tuesday evening in a 2-0 loss to Susquehanna in the Landmark Conference semifinal matchup.

The Cardinals finished their season with an overall record of 10-5-3 while Susquehanna advances to the league final sitting at 13-3-2.

Catholic battled throughout the match against the hosts, being outshot 13-9. Junior forward Elizabeth Johnson tallied three shots including the Cardinals' first shot on goal in the 3rd minute.

The two sides went into halftime scoreless, but the River Hawks notched two goals early on in the second half of play. Maggie Moorcones and Bella Bertoncini each had shots on goal that were saved later on in the match. Johnson's final shot in the 87th minute hit the post to keep Catholic at bay.

Sophomore goalkeeper Nina Fernandez made four saves in an effort to keep the visitors in the game.

On the season, the Cardinals' defense improved, giving up just 19 goals in 18 matches. With plenty of starters set to return next year, Coach JP Sousa's team will be in position to contend once again for a Landmark championship.

Susquehanna will travel to top-seeded Scranton, who also won its semifinal match 2-0, this Saturday, November 3 for a 1 p.m. game to decide the conference's champion.
