WASHINGTON, D.C. - A 64th minute header goal was the difference for the Catholic University women's soccer team as the Cardinals were defeated by Scranton 1-0 Saturday afternoon in the team's first Landmark Conference game of the year.
Sophomore goalkeerper Nina Fernandez set a new career-high with nine saves to keep the Cards (4-2-2) in the game, but the team could not find an equalizer.
After a scoreless first half, Catholic fought back into the game, matching the Royals in corner kicks (1-1) and trailing in shots by one (4-5).
Scranton (6-0-1) was awarded a free kick near the right corner flag in the 64th minute, and Corinne McDonald headed the cross into the net to score the only goal in the contest.
The Cardinals' next match is on the road at St. Mary's (Md.) on Wednesday, September 26 at 4 p.m.
