Madison, N.J. — The Catholic University of America softball team earned its first two Landmark Conference wins of the season in impressive fashion as the Cardinals took two from Drew on the road. The Cards forced extras and won in the ninth of game one, 8-6, before exploding for an 8-1 victory in the second of the double-dip.
The Birds showed off their ability to win in different ways with eight runs in both contests, using clutch hitting down the stretch in game one, before a dominant pitching performance along with some hot bats led the way in the game two.
Catholic trailed, 5-1, at the start of the sixth inning of the initial game, but used a three-run inning to get back into it. Rookie shortstop Giselle Diaz came through with the clutch sacrifice fly to extend the game before a long ball from senior catcher Alyssa Keane and a two-RBI double by freshman right fielder Taylor Forgen helped seal the with for the Cardinals.
Junior starter Kelly Lynch went the distance in game two, as she did not allow an earned run and scattered just four hits with two strikeouts.
Catholic made sure to do its damage early as Keane delivered with a two-RBI single to get the scoring started and Diaz followed with an RBI single of her own to put the Cards up 3-0.
The duo kept it going in game two as both chipped in two hits and two runs and were joined by Diaz with multi-hit contests.
It will be a busy week for the Birds as they are set for two more doubleheaders this week, both coming at home. Catholic is set to host Rutgers-Camden on Thursday at 1 p.m., before taking on Susquehanna on Saturday, also at 1 p.m.
