Cardinals Earn First Win of the Season, First for Deodhar

HILTON HEAD, S.C. - Led by a win at No. 3 singles by junior Kyle Weber, the Catholic University men's tennis team picked up its first win of the season on Monday with a 6-3 victory over Division II Shepherd.

The win was also the first in the collegiate career of first-year head coach Nitin Deodhar who came to Catholic after two seasons as an assistant coach Division I Towson.

Weber improved his record to 2-0 at No. 3 singles this season with a 2-6, 6-1, 10-8 win over Kaleb Lochner.

The Cardinals (1-4) earned two victories by default at No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles so they led 3-1 to start the five singles matches. Freshman Paul Smith after teaming up with sophomore Christian Papalambros to post an 8-6 victory at No. 2 doubles over Lochner and Nicholas Ferony.

Senior Ted Tiu posted his second win of the season and first in his first match at No. 2 singles with a 7-5, 6-4 win over Evan Dokken before sophomore Dom Mazzeo picked up his first win at No. 5 singles by defeating Ryan Cox, 6-2, 1-6, 10-8.

Catholic returns to action on Wednesday at 5 p.m., against FDU-Florham from the MAC Freedom Conference.
