Cardinals Draw With Blue Jays, Secure Home Playoff Match

WASHINGTON, D.C. - In a matchup between the top two teams in the Landmark Conference, the Catholic University men's soccer team drew Elizabethtown 0-0 Saturday afternoon at Cardinal Stadium.

The scoreless result gives the Cardinals a 5-1-1 Landmark record, securing second place in the conference standings heading into the playoffs. They will host the semifinal matchup against the No. 3 seed Drew on Wednesday, October 31.

Catholic (10-5-1) battled the top-seeded Blue Jays throughout the match to keep the game tied. Elizabethtown (8-4-4, 5-0-2) outshot the Cardinals 13-3 in the first forty-five minutes of play, but the hosts responded as the game went on, with the final shot tally falling in Elizabethtown's favor just 18-14.

Sophomore goalkeeper Jack Long continued his stellar performance in goal for Catholic, making five saves in 110 minutes of play to keep a clean sheet. With just one minute left in the first half, Long made a big save diving to the right post to keep the game scoreless.

Long and the Catholic defense, including the likes of Mike Narzikul, Corbin Brailsford, Ryan Kennedy, and Mitch Ford, have not allowed a goal in six matches now. The last time Coach Travis Beauchamp's team went on a run of six straight clean sheet matches was the 2014 season.

The Cardinals celebrated their senior class before the match, honoring Brailsford, Aaron Boyle, Tyler Martin, Brian Galfond, and Jake Nabbie for their commitment to the program. Boyle had one of the game's best chances when his shot to the left of the goal was saved nicely by the Elizabethtown goalkeeper in the 70th minute. Galfond had an acrobatic effort cleared off the line by a Blue Jay defender in the 12th minute as well.

Catholic, now unbeaten in seven games, turns its attention to the conference playoffs. The Landmark semifinal game will take place at Cardinal Stadium. Kickoff set for 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, October 31.
