Catenacci, McShea Headline Cardinals' 8-4 Loss at St. Mary's

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. - Catholic University men's lacrosse junior Vince Catenacci scored three goals while freshman Mike McShea won 11 faceoffs and picked up six ground balls, but St. Mary's (Md.) limited the Cardinals to just two goals over the final three quarters en route to an 8-4 win Saturday at Jamie L. Roberts Field.

Catholic (3-3) lost for just the second time in the last five games despite winning 11 of 15 faceoffs, including all four in the fourth quarter, and allowing its lowest goal total of the season.

The team's leading goal scorer, Catenacci added three more on Saturday to post his third-straight hat-trick and his fourth in six games this season. He leads the team with 18 goals this season, 10 of which have come in the last three games.

After first quarter goals from Catenacci and freshman Joey Rockovich, the game was tied at 2-2 before the Seahawks (3-2) scored two in the second quarter to take a 4-2 halftime lead.

St. Mary's also scored two in the third and two in the fourth while limiting Catholic to just one in each as the Seahawks posted their second win in three home games this season, both of which have come against teams from the Landmark Conference. St. Mary's downed Elizabethtown at home, 9-5, on February 23.

Catenacci had the most success against St. Mary's goalie Ross Snodderly, scoring three goals on nine shots. The rest of the Cardinals had one goal on 22 shots as Snodderly finished with 12 saves.

Junior Griffin Smith had two ground balls and two caused turnovers while junior Alex Mulyk had eight saves, two ground balls and one caused turnover.

Catholic returns to action next Saturday, March 9 when it takes on its second-straight opponent from the Capital Athletic Conference in Mary Washington. Faceoff from the Battleground Athletic Complex in Fredericksburg, Virginia is at 1 p.m.
