WASHINGTON, D.C. - Catholic University men's basketball senior Andre Mitchell and junior Brandon Easton combined for 43 points as they led the Cardinals to a hard-fought 90-85 victory over defending Landmark Conference champion Moravian on Saturday.
Mitchell poured in 22 points and Easton tallied a career-high 21, including 15 in the first half, as Catholic (5-8, 1-1 Landmark) ended a three-game losing streak.
This time, it was the Cards who made the decisive plays down the stretch. Catholic posted season highs in free throws (29) and attempts (46) and needed every one of them. The Cardinals' final eight points came from the line.
Easton made 7 of 11 from the field and 7 of 9 at the charity stripe. Mitchell was 7 of 12 shooting and 6-for-9 at the line. Easton sank two free throws with 22.6 seconds left to put Catholic up, 86-80. Following a Moravian 3-pointer, Mitchell and senior Jimmy Golaszewski made 1 of 2 each.
Oneil Holder led the Greyhounds (8-5, 1-1 Landmark) with 22 points and five assists. Jimmy Murray added 17 points, five rebounds and four assists for Moravian who was picked to repeat by the league's coaches in the preseason poll.
Junior Riley Hayes posted his fifth double-double of the season with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Junior Collin Hartmann contributed 13 points, three assists and three steals. He was 6 of 7 from the foul line. Junior Bryan Easton scored nine points.
After Golaszewski corralled one of his five boards, he dribbled ahead and passed to Hartmann for a fastbreak layup and 74-68 Catholic lead with 4:24 to go. The Cards would eventually go up by 10 and hung on by playing good defense, rebounding and making free throws.
Catholic plays at Juniata on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
NOTES: Hartmann notched a four-point play in the first half and made all three free throws after being fouled on a three-point attempt in the second ... The Cardinals led by as many as 12 points, 17-5 and 20-8, in the opening frame ... Catholic's 46 free throw attempts is its most since becoming a founding member of the Landmark Conference in 2007. It's 29 made free throws is its highest since making that same amount in an 81-78 loss to Widener at home on Jan. 3, 2018 ... In two conference games this season, Mitchell is averaging 21.0 points after soring 20 in the opener versus Drew on December 1.
