WASHINGTON, D.C. - Catholic University head men's basketball coach Steve Howes announced his team's 2018-19 schedule on Thursday, highlighted by an exhibition against Division I George Washington and the annual Holiday Inn College Park Classic.
"I am excited about our schedule and look forward to seeing our young men in action," said Howes who is in his 15th season in Brookland this year. "We again feature a high-major Division I team and a very challenging nonconference Division III slate of games."
The Cardinals, who finished 15-11 a year ago and 9-5 in the Landmark Conference, open this year's slate by making the short trip across town to Foggy Bottom on Sunday, October 28 to take on George Washington at the Charles E. Smith Center in an exhibition. Catholic owns a 26-20 lead in the all-time series that dates back to 1912, but the two teams have not met since 1984.
The Cardinals officially begin the 104th season in school history on Tuesday, November 13 with their home opener against cross town rival Marymount (Va.) at Franny Murray Court beginning at 7 p.m. Catholic has won 31 of the 44 all-time meetings against the Saints, including a 74-59 decision on the road on Nov. 16, 2016. The last game between the two teams at the DuFour Center came back on Jan. 31, 2007 when the Cardinals won in overtime, 67-64.
Catholic will then make the short four-mile trip south to Gallaudet for the Battle of D.C. & Maryland where the Cardinals will take on Hood on Saturday, November 17 before taking on either Gallaudet or St. Mary's on Sunday.
The Cardinals return home following the Thanksgiving holiday for back-to-back games against Sarah Lawrence and DeSales on Franny Murray Court before opening Landmark Conference play on Saturday, December 1 at Drew.
Since the Landmark Conference began prior to the 2007-08 season, Catholic is second in overall wins during that time with 202, trailing only Scranton who has 221. The Cardinals are also second in conference wins over that span with 104 and have won 65.8 percent of their games.
"Every game is the biggest of the year," said Howes. "It isn't like an NBA schedule. With so few games, we need the utmost respect for every opponent. We need to play our standard of excellence by playing together with passion and a high basketball IQ."
After a nonconference trip to Stevens on Friday, December 7, Catholic begins a stretch of six consecutive home games on Sunday, December 16 against Gettysburg.
The highlight of that stretch is the team's annual holiday tournament, the Holiday Inn College Park Classic in which the Cardinals welcome Medaille, N.C. Wesleyan and Babson to Franny Murray Court December 29-30. As usual, the tournament will be held in conjunction with the women's Jamie Lynn Roberts Tournament. The men will play at 5 and 7 p.m., following the women's games at 1 and 3 p.m.
Catholic begins the new year with back-to-back home contests against Rochester and conference foe Moravian on January 2 and January 5.
The Cardinals then hit the road for five of their next seven games beginning on Wednesday, January 9 at Juniata before heading to conference rival Scranton on Saturday, January 12. Home games against Elizabethtown and Susquehanna await next before Catholic finishes the month with three-straight road games at Goucher, Moravian and Elizabetown.
Four of the Cardinals' five February contests are at Franny Murray Court, starting with Scranton on Saturday, February 2 and Juniata on Wednesday, Februray 6. The team then heads to Susquehanna for its final road game on Saturday, February 9 before finishing the regular season at home against Goucher and Drew on Senior Day.
