ASHLAND, Va. - The Catholic University field hockey team was victorious in the nonconference contest at Randolph-Macon on Wednesday night, shutting out the Yellow Jackets 3-0.
The first quarter turned up scoreless until senior forward Alexandra DiFlorio beat out the keeper in front of the box off an assist from junior forward Jess Waite, putting the Cards up 1-0. In the third quarter, Waite came through for Catholic making the score 2-0 with an assist by sophomore forward Hannah Bateman. In the 48th minute, Waite knocked in her second goal of the night with an assist from DiFlorio to make the final score 3-0.
Sophomore goal keeper Maysen Elliott had five saves in the win while the Cardinals recorded 19 shots on goal against the Yellow Jackets.
Tonight's matchup marked the first meeting between Catholic and Randolph-Macon since Aug. 29, 2014. Waite and DiFlorio's performances give them both their second three-point games of the season.
The Cardinals will host the No. 12 Messiah College Falcons this Saturday, Sept. 21. The game will be in celebration of the 50th anniversary for the Catholic University field hockey team since its inaugural season in 1969.
