WASHINGTON — The Catholic University of America field hockey team claimed the 2017 Landmark Regular Season Championship on Saturday night at Cardinal Stadium as the team defeated Scranton in a battle of unbeatens, 2-0, on Senior Night.
The No. 12-nationally ranked Cards struck in each half as the No. 1 seed an home field advantage was on the line as both teams entered the night with perfect 6-0 league marks.
The Cardinal defense was able to take of the rest as senior goalkeeper Sophia Hamilton, who made five saves, along with senior defenders Kelly Cousoulis, Lizzie Ireland and Marisa Martinelli were able to stave off several Scranton charges for the shutout.
Catholic got its insurance score just 12;40 into the second half as the duo of Ireland and Martinelli connected off a penalty corner for a laser strike past the goalkeeper and a 2-0 advantage.
The Cards will now host a Landmark Conference Semifinal on Wednesday, November 1 at 7 p.m., when they take on Elizabethtown. Catholic defeated the Blue Jays, 4-2, in a matchup in D.C., earlier this month.
