Field Hockey Upsets No. 18 Christopher Newport

WASHINGTON — The Catholic University of America field hockey team went on the road Wednesday night and pulled off the upset as the Cardinals downed No. 18 Christopher Newport, 2-1.

After a 1-1 first half, the Cards scored the gamewinner with just over two minutes left as junior Hannah Schied took the field from sophomore Nicole Tsiaras and found the back of the cage for the gamewinner.

Senior goalkeeper Sophia Hamilton was sensational as she made a season-high 15 saves to earn the win as she faced 18 Christopher Newport shots.

Catholic was efficient with its offense as it put 10 of its 12 shots on goal despite getting fewer penalty corners.

The Cardinals struck first as rookie Meghan Shallow fed one in front and got the tip-in from sophomore Katie Anderson for the score.

Christopher Newport got the equalizer in the 30th minute but Hamilton was able to fend off 17 other first-half shots to help neutralize their attack.

Catholic was well-distributed in its offense as eight different attackers registered shots on goal.

Hamilton also got helped from senior captain Kelly Cousoulis who registered another defensive save.

The Cards will look build on its three-game win streak this Friday when they host Misericordia at 7 p.m., at Cardinal Stadium.
