McDowell joined the Catholic coaching staff for the 2016 season. McDowell broke into the collegiate coaching ranks in 2013 as the assistant offensive line coach at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute after serving the same position for a season at Bishop McNamara High School (MD). He held the same position in 2014, helping guide a team that averaged 378.5 yards, 28.2 points per game and a berth in the ECAC North Atlantic Bowl. In 2015 he served as the Tight Ends Coach as the Engineers went 9-2 including a win in the Inaugural ECAC Asa S. Bushnell Bowl. He helped oversee the development of two All-Liberty League Offensive Lineman during his tenure in Troy.
A 2012 graduate of Ferrum College in Virginia, with a Bachelors of Science in History and Political Science with a minor in political science, McDowell was a four-year member of the Division III Panthers. He was a two-time member of the USA South All-Conference First Team. In 2011, his senior season, McDowell also picked up Roanoke Times All-State First Team, VaSID All-State First Team, and D3football.com All-Region Second Team selections. Academically, McDowell earned USA South Conference All-Academic Team honors three times.
McDowell earned his a Masters of Education from the University of Missouri in Educational, School, and Counseling Psychology with an emphasis in Positive Coaching.
