WASHINGTON, D.C. - Catholic University senior pitcher Jon Mierzwa was honored with a selection to the D3baseball.com All-Mid-Atlantic Region First Team on Wednesday afternoon after a phenomenal season on the mound for the Cardinals.
This is the third year Mierzwa has earned All-Region accolades, making the Second Team last year and Third Team after his sophomore season. The right hander from Laurel, Md. becomes the first Catholic baseball player to be a four-time all-conference and three-time all-region selection in program history.
Mierzwa earns First Team honors after being the Landmark's most dominant pitcher this spring. In the final start of his career, he became the all-time leader in Landmark Conference history with 286 career strikeouts. He made his mark on Catholic baseball's history as well as he is the first Cardinal to be awarded Landmark Pitcher of the Year.
Mierzwa led the conference in a few major pitching categories, tying for the lead in wins (7), leading all pitchers in strikeouts (72), and boasting the best earned run average for starters (2.02). Boasting a 7-0 record in starts, Mierzwa struck out 72 batters in 66.2 innings and added two complete games. In conference games, the senior went 4-0 with 39 strikeouts.
The only First Team selection, Mierzwa is one of three Landmark players to make the all-region teams, as Scranton's Connor Harding (Second Team) and Elizabethtown's Derek Manning (Third Team) earned the accolades.
