Cardinals Fend Off Royals For Second Conference Win

WASHINGTON – On the Cardinals third 10-run outing of the season, the Catholic baseball team outlast the Royals of Scranton 10-9 for CUA's second Landmark Conference win of the season.

The two teams combined for 22 hits in the game, as the Cards held off Scranton's four runs in the top of the seventh that tied the game and their final two-run push in the top of the ninth.

John Palladino went 2-of-4 from the plate, drove in one and scored two runs. He singled in the first and eighth innings.

Andrew Carroll recorded the win for the Cardinals. He allowed three runs over 5.6 innings. Carroll struck out eight, walked three and gave up seven hits.

The Cardinals did not relinquish the lead after scoring three runs in the first inning when they scored on an error and two singles.  With the Royals on the board at a 3-1 deficit, CUA took a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the second.

The Cardinals took a stronger lead with another three runs in the fifth. Andrew Stewart ignited the inning with a single, plating Nick Clary.  Followed up with a single from Mike McFarland, scoring Paul Burmester and Marc Hanna.

Scranton put the Cards on their heels by scoring four runs in the top of the seventh, and tying the contest 8-8.  CUA regained the lead with two runs on the bottom of the seventh.

CUA's Chris Nee recorded the save as he struck out Patrick O'Dell for the third out, halting the Royals run and Scranton's runner on third.

Catholic advances to 9-5 overall and 2-1 in conference action, as they break away from conference for a single 3:30 matchup at Washington College on Wednesday, March 19.
