CUA Baseball Opens Spring Break Competition Undefeated

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Catholic University baseball team opened their weeklong stint at Myrtle Beach with a 7-1 win over New Paltz and a 4-3 victory over Stevens with the season's first inside the park homerun.

After being tied 1-1 into the top of the fifth, the Cards recorded an impressive four runs to take a 5-1 lead.

CUA's Andrew Stewart scored first, reaching second base with a double to center field and heading home on Stefan Poggioli's single to right field.

In the top of the fifth, Stewart was once again the first Cardinal on base, this time from a walk.  Stewart moved to second on a bunt by Eric Scamardella.  On an error by the pitcher, Stewart and Scamardella once again moved around the diamond.  A groundout by Dan Hinchcliff allowed and Stewart to score and Scamardella to advance to third, and another single from Poggioli sent Scamardella home.  The final two runs of the inning came from John Palladino's triple into left field.

Catholic added two more runs on the top of the ninth.  Joe Franchi connected for a double bringing Pollogioli home, which was followed by a single from Palladino for Quoc Tran to score.

Palladino tallied three RBIs on two hits, as he recorded a triple in the fifth inning and a single in the ninth.

Kevin Farley controlled the mound for six innings, striking out five batters, while allowing one earned run on four hits and no walks.

The second game of the day was a bit more eventful.  With the score tied 3-3 after the top of the sixth and quiet seventh and eighth inning.  Hinchcliff recorded his first in the park homerun of the season on a grounder to left field.

Sean Van Gieson provided a strong performance from the mound.  Van Gieson held Stevens Institute hitless over two innings, struckout one batter, did not walk any batters faced and did not allow one earned run.
