Cardinals win streak snapped in loss to Mary Washington

WASHINGTON – CUA had its five game win streak snapped on Wednesday in a 6-0 loss to Mary Washington. After three scoreless innings, the Eagles broke through with two runs in the 4th, and then added three more in the 7th. The Cardinals were held to two hits on the afternoon.

CUA threatened to get on the board in the 3rd when Wes Stonelake singled and moved down to second on a sac bunt. Dan Hinchcliff's ground out to the pitcher moved Stonelake over to third with two outs, but Pat DeToro was retired to end the inning.

Mary Washington got on the board in the 4th when T.J. Cretney's infield single brought home Jono Haught to make it 1-0. A CUA error then allowed the second Eagles run to cross.

The Cardinals had another chance in the 4th, beginning with a bunt single by Brendan Breslin. Breslin then stole second, and moved down to third on an Eagles error.

The next two hitters went down in order though, and the score remained 2-0.

In the 7th, Mary Washington pushed three more runs across. The big blow came off the bat of Seth Jordan, who delivered a two-run single to left. Haught added a RBI triple as the Eagles opened up a 5-0 lead.

Mary Washington added an insurance run in the 9th.

CUA starter Sean Van Gieson threw five strong innings on the mound, allowing only one earned run on six hits.

Rob Steinkopf, Kevin Farley and Will O'Leary finished things off in relief for the Cards.

Bernard Mayflower earned the win for the visitors, after he went five innings, struck out five and allowed only two hits.

CUA is back in action on Saturday afternoon when the Cardinals open Landmark Conference play vs. Moravian at home. Start time of the doubleheader is set for noon.
