WASHINGTON — The Catholic University of America Associate Vice President & Director of Athletics Sean Sullivan announced the appointment of Ed Dolan as the Cardinals' men's & women's varsity golf coach as the program returns to the fold for the first time in three decades.
Dolan comes to Catholic after spending the past three-plus seasons as head coach of the Shepherd University men's golf team in Shepherdstown, W.Va. Dolan also has an extensive golf background as he serves as the PGA Professional at Locust Hill Golf Course in Charles Town after previously working as PGA Director of Instruction at National Golf Club in Fort Washington, Maryland.
"We are very excited to bring Ed Dolan into our athletics family here at Catholic University," said Sullivan. "Ed immediately showed himself to be an excellent choice to re-start our varsity golf programs. As a highly-successful, sitting Division II head coach who also has years of experience as a PGA professional, he is extremely qualified to lead both of our teams."
Dolan earned Mountain East Conference (MEC) Coach of the Year honors in 2015-16 as he led Shepherd to its first conference title. He led Rams to the NCAA Atlantic Eastern Regionals in each of the past two seasons, the first appearances in program history.
Additionally, Shepherd's Ryan Crabtree was named MEC Men's Golf Player of the Year, while Joey Burkinshaw and Brandon Dang also garnered All-MEC honors.
"This is an amazing opportunity to build a program from the ground up. The moment I stepped on campus, I knew that this was a place that I wanted to be," said Dolan. "The opportunities of starting a new program are endless and it will be exciting to show prospective student-athletes all Catholic University has to offer, as well as the D.C. area's great golf courses. I am thrilled to be joining the team at Catholic. Throughout the interview process, I was impressed by the professionalism of the staff and their pride in the university. I am looking forward to getting started."
Dolan was also voted the No. 1 Teacher in the State of Maryland by Golf Digest in 2005-06 and was ranked among the "Best In State" by Golf Digest from 2007-11.
Dolan has also served as an adjunct professor at Salisbury University and University of Maryland-Eastern Shore (UMES) where he taught golf to students of a variety of skill levels and experience. He was instrumental in establishing and developing the UMES Golf Academy.
A PGA professional with 20 years of experience, Dolan has served as a teaching professional at Nutters Crossing Golf Club in Salisbury, Md., and Clay-Kizer Golf Complex in Austin, Texas.
He also had stints as a professional at Hartefield National in Avondale, Pa., and as director of instruction at Mountain Branch Golf Course in Joppa, Maryland.
Dolan earned his bachelor's degree from Greensboro College in 1991. He gained Class A membership from the PGA in 1996.
